Talking about Down syndrome?

 In Education, General

Language is very powerful. Language does not just describe reality. Language creates the reality it describes.
– Desmond Tutu

As a speech and language therapist I am only too aware of the power of language. The language that has been used in the past around Down syndrome and prenatal screening, comes from a time long ago. A time of discrimination and of devaluing human beings because of an inherent characteristic. I created this poster in order to suggest language that is appropriate in an era of equal rights, equal value and recognition of the inherent dignity of someone with Down syndrome. Here is a download
link, and my blog about it. I hope it is helpful!
