Today a couple with Down syndrome hold a ‘socially distanced’ wedding after coronavirus restrictions are relaxed.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL….

The Bride wore an ivory gown as she walked, beaming down the aisle towards the man who would soon become her husband.

4th July 2020 at 2:30pm in the presence of just 30 family and friends, Heidi Crowter became the new Mrs James Carter. The ceremony, at Hillfields Church, Coventry, was the icing on the cake of a two year romance that has seen Heidi and James show true love knows no boundaries.

Never was this more true than over the previous three months which have separated the couple by 180 miles during lockdown. James (26) and Heidi (25) had their first date on 17th October 2017. They went to Frankie & Benny’s for dinner, and then bowling. And from that magical first date there was no looking back.

The couple knew there was a special connection and after just one year of dating James popped the question. He took Heidi to her favourite restaurant, Playwrights in Coventry. A usually chatty Heidi was taken by surprise and James revealed to Making Chromosomes Count that “She was speechless though, she didn’t know what to say.”

Planning the wedding was exciting but with just three months to go before the big day the UK was plunged into lockdown and the wedding day itself was in doubt, as ceremonies were not permitted.

However, as if the stars themselves aligned, the restrictions on weddings were lifted today, meaning the couple could exchange vows. Officiated by Pastor Paul, this too added special significance. Pastor Paul was the first to visit baby Heidi when she was born, he visited her during her time spent in ITU and baptised her. Never was there a more perfect person to stand with Heidi on her wedding day and as Pastor Paul said of the day he held Heidi in his arms “I just knew you were precious!”

The celebration may have been a much smaller version of what was originally planned but the couple plan to have exactly the day they wanted in May next year, including 9 Bridesmaids and 2 page boys!

However, today as the confetti fluttered down on the happy couple, we will leave the last words to Heidi… “I have been dreaming of this day since I was born!”.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Carter.
