Amelia-May: One of 6 Seen By The Queen!

In Down Syndrome News, In The Media

You may remember that as a patron of the National Portrait Gallery since 2012, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, spearheaded a photography competition during lockdown.  On seeing this, Wendy Huson, a fierce advocate for the Down syndrome community, submitted a picture of daughter, Amelia (Amelia is 5 years old and lives with her family in Liverpool).

The Hold Still 2020 project captured the country’s experiences of COVID-19 through photographs. This project was launched in May and received over 31,000 images in just 6 weeks. Amelia’s portrait was titled Thank You and was celebrating International Nurses Day.

Kate and the panel of judges then had the difficult task of selecting the final 100 portraits which they have unveiled today and are featured as the Hold Still digital exhibition here:

Not only is Amelia’s picture one of the 100 chosen but hers is one of 6 portraits shown to the Queen!!!

Wendy, Amelia’s mum said, “This is huge to us, not only for Amelia but also for the Down syndrome community.”  National Portrait Gallery stated that, “your portrait will help to create an important historical record of these unprecedented times for future generations”.

The Queen states, “It was with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to look through a number of portraits that made the final 100 images for Hold Still photography project.

The duchess of Cambridge and I were inspired to see how the photographs have captured the reliance of the British people at such a challenging time, whether that is through celebrating frontline workers, recognising community spirit or showing the efforts of individuals supporting those in need.”

Wendy tells MCC News

“Everywhere we look that little face appears, spreading across media and social networking platforms.”

“Mummy & Daddy are bursting with pride and excitement while Amelia is totally oblivious in school”
